Chiropractic is worldwide the third largest health profession after medicine and dentistry.
The word "chiropractic" is derived from the Greek and means "done by hand". Chiropractic methods have been known for thousands of years and have evolved into an academic profession based on science, art, and philosophy.
Chiropractic in Germany
Chiropractic is not yet recognized as a separate profession in Germany. Therefore the title "Chiropractor" is not protected here. In consequence, courses of various lengths and quality in chiropractic techniques are being offered to medical doctors and lay medical practitioners. There are many advertisements offering "the new American chiropractic", "American Chiropractics", etc., by persons who have taken courses which are not accredited by any of our international chiropractic accrediting agencies.
German Chiropractors' Association (GCA)
Chiropractors, who are members of the German Chiropractors' Association (GCA), in German: Deutsche Chiropraktoren-Gesellschaft e.V. (DCG), have successfully completed a five to seven year full-time study program at universities in Denmark, England, Wales, USA, Canada, South Africa, and Australia, which is accredited according to international standards and organized by the specific guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO). After completion of the study program there is a minimum of a one year assocateship with a principal who has been in good standing with the GCA for at least 5 years. During this time of associateship there is another examination which is basically a clinical exam, and it also contains questions specific to practicing in Germany.
Currently there are about 100 chiropractors in Germany who have the qualifications to belong to the DCG/GCA. Therefore watch for that seal of excellence: DCG/GCA!
